I'm doing a modest remodel of a 1944 kitchen. Simple, smooth front cabinets in bright white with brushed nickel hardware, white appliances. I'm replacing countertops and floor and repainting walls (there's a chair rail).
Are there guidelines on selecting countertop, floor, and wall colors? e.g. if one is light, the other should be dark, etc. I'm probably going to use a Silestone product on countertops, Marmoleum on floors. My "theme" with accessories is cherries. I'm really at a loss on making color selections.

There's no right answer about choosing colors for your kitchen, Feythe. I'd suggest checking out pictures of kitchens that have white cabinets and appliances to get an idea for your own personal taste. Once you have a better idea for what you like, consider how your choices will work in your space. For example, a bold, dark wall color may overpower and shrink a small kitchen.

Here are a few white kitchens I like.

This kitchen has beautiful white cabinets and bold black countertops.

This kitchen is all-white, which is bright and airy.

While this kitchen has stainless appliances, it does have white cabinetry complemented by bold cranberry walls. The dark countertops help bridge the stark white vs. cranberry scheme.

Keep looking around and find what you like!

Thanks so much for your thoughts and the links, Caitlin. Much appreciated. Because my changes are modest and my house old, the photos of hi-end kitchens don't quite reflect what I'm working with, but they DO help! I just don't want to end up with something that looks amateur rather than tasteful and professional. LOL! A friend is sending me contact info for a designer she worked with on her kitchen (bigger, newer home) and I may engage her consulting services to help me decide on the approach to colors. Will post update later. Thanks again!
