we want to remodel kitchen..probably require knock down a wall or addition to back of house (5 feet or so) as current footprint is not big enough to accomodate needs. do we need an architect?? are they worth extra expense or just use a kitchen contractor? beth
You don't necessarily need an architect, but I do recommend at least consulting a kitchen designer. An experienced designer would be able to evaluate your space and your needs and determine whether it is possible to knock down an interior wall and make the kitchen work without building an addition.
An addition is ALWAYS going to be the more expensive route, because it requires a new foundation, framing, insulation, siding, roofing, etc. Additions are also far more likely--depending on where you live--to require more permits and inspections, as well as blueprints approved by the city (they may even insist they be drawn up by an architect).
