is there any rule of thumb for matching drawer pulls? I have stainless steel appliances, but silver seems to clash with the new wood color

I would suggest going with stainless steel to match the appliances... it's a bit more contemporary. If you prefer a more traditional feel there are plenty of ceramic or porcelan knobs that would look great.

I feel the rule of thumb is -- do what reflects your style and personality.
