I am interested in linoleum, primarily because it's made out of natural materials. While I've read, on this site and elsewhere, that linoleum can be fairly durable, my only experiences have been somewhat negative (these were rental experiences, though). Does anyone have any comments or testimonials as to the positive qualities with linoleum in general or some brand of it in particular? I am trying to design a kitchen with mostly natural and renewable materials, as you can see from my post on Spekva wooden countertops.

I grew up with the "real" linoleum flooring. It wears well as the color goes all the way through. It is easy to clean and resists germs as it contains linseed oil. You can also create cool patterns by mixing colors, either by having your installer freehand cut the pattern into sheets of two or more colors. Or by mixing the new rectangular do-it-yourself tiles, create a lovely geometric pattern.

Lineoleum, going by the most popular brand called Marmoleum, is soft on the feet and just requires a damp mopping now and then. It is a good choice for a modern or traditional home. I have even seen it in very high end homes in children's bedrooms and baths.


I am currently planning a major remodel of my home. My last home, which I built in 1999, was constructed following the National Lung Association's Healthy House standards. It was the best decision I ever made.

I will caution you to work with Healthy House standards as some "green" or renewable materials will outgas and provide a less-than desirable environment for you and your family.
