By the posts it's seems as though everyone has some great advice and I could use some.

I am in the process of building my own house. A craftsman style home an open floor plan with a 11x16 kitchen and 11x16 dining room. I have picked out a shaker style hickory cabinet with stainless steel appliances. I think I am going to go with a dark tile in the kitchen. What color of hardwood flooring should I use? Same hickory finish as the cabinets? What color counter tops would you recommend? Very open floor plan so the dining room and living room and adjoining hallway will have all of the same flooring. Thank you in advance for your help!!

Sounds like a fantastic house you've got going. You can't go wrong with a natural-finish or medium-finish oak plank floor, especially in a Craftsman-style house. The style is all about letting the natural character of the materials shine through and maintaining harmony throughout a space.
A light or medium wood finish on floors would coordinate nicely (probably) with a hickory cabinet. Plus, that would help keep the overall effect a little lighter, given the dark tile you're planning for the kitchen. Your countertop color will really depend on the color family your other materials are in: are they yellow/brown/tan? green? blue? red? Warm wood and tile colors usually coordinate best with warm countertop colors; and cool with cool. If in doubt, get as many color samples as you can before making a choice, group your options together, consider them for a few days in different lighting conditions, and see how you like the colors together. That's what I did!

Thanks so much for the help! I wasn't sure if it was a bad idea to mix two different wood species like that. Would you help a little more with the color family part!? I have seen kitchen pictures with walls that were painte almost like a sea foam green and it looked really sharp If I pick that color for the walls what kind of granit should I pick? Black or a lighter color? Thanks for the response!

Jerry,
Hopefully you have spent some time with a kitchen specialist and not just tried to do your kitchen planning through a lumber yard where you might be buying your framing materials. Use the kitchens.com professional locator to find a local kitchen dealer who can pull things together for you in the kitchen and should be happy to help with some decorating solutions for the rest of the home too.
