We're installing a new kitchen in our cottage. What kind of countertop material will withstand the changes in temperature. The cottage is winterized but not really used in the winter so we don't leave the heat on. Do we need to worry about the countertop material??? Will all types of surfaces withstand cold temperatures?? We're thinking about the following materials: granite, quartz, solid surface or laminate.

Hi Torogirl-

You should steer clear of the Solid Surface countertops, since they are typically made of fiberglass/acrylic plastic, and will react poorly to extreme changes in temperature. ie) running hot water into a cold Corain sink will produce hairline fractures typically around the drain area. Quartz and granite will be the most stable, but will also feel cold to the touch, and may not give you that rustic cottage feel that you are looking for. That said, I think either laminate or concrete(for its rustic qualities) would be my first choices.
